Wasp

A wasp is not a bee and there are thousands of different species of wasps in the UK. Most are solitary and are not a threat to humans. Only nine species are social and form nests. Large wasps are queens, usually seen in late spring as they look for suitable nests in holes or cracks in buildings or trees. Smaller wasps are typically seen later in the summer. Nests may contain thousands of wasps.
The common wasp is found in the UK and these are easily identified by their black and yellow stripes and known for its painful sting.
